Virginia wine is made from grapes grown in Virginia. This state has been producing wine since early European colonization. In fact, Virginia is home to some of the oldest wineries in the United States. The wine is known as Chateau Morrisette. This article explores three of Virginia’s oldest wineries: Bluemont Vineyard, Ankida Ridge Vineyard, and Chateau Morrisette.
Chateau Morrisette is Virginia’s oldest winery
Chateau Morrisette is one of the oldest wineries in the state and one of the largest. Founded in 1978, the winery is now operated by its third generation. The company has 15 acres of vineyards and grows herbs and produce for its restaurant. It also sells wines, estate-produced foods, and gift items. Since its start, Chateau Morrisette has increased production from a few thousand cases a year to over 50,000. Its wines are now sold in retail stores throughout five southeastern states and are shipped to more than 30 states.
Bluemont Vineyard
The extensive vineyard is open for tours and tastings. It also features a terrace restaurant.
Ankida Ridge
Christine and Dennis Vrooman sold their veterinary practice in Virginia Beach and decided to buy a cabin on the slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Their new cabin was surrounded by 100 acres of mountainous forest. However, they wanted to get a better view and hired a contractor to clear the land up the mountain. Unfortunately, the contractor didn’t clear the correct area.
Ankida Ridge Vineyard
The aptly named Ankida Ridge Vineyard in Virginia is a family-owned and operated winery that specializes in Pinot Noir. This vineyard, located on the Blue Ridge mountains, practices environmentally responsible viticulture. The vineyard uses natural pest control techniques and rocky soil to produce its wines. This winery also welcomes visitors, offering a personalized and educational wine tasting experience.
Stone Tower Winery
Wine lovers will find a wealth of options at Stone Tower Winery, a Virginia winery located on a picturesque rural estate. This winery features expert-led cellar tours, self-guided vineyard tours, and wine tastings.
Quirk’s rooftop
Quirk’s Charlottesville rooftop bar offers panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and is an indoor/outdoor lounge space that’s perfect for enjoying an evening with friends. With a menu inspired by the rustic Italian cuisine, Quirk Charlottesville serves up innovative thin-crust pizzas and savory main dishes, along with a craft cocktail menu and an extensive wine list.
